چکیده

The application of fallout radionuclides in soil erosion and sedimentation investigations has provided a valuable tool for improving the understanding of erosion and sediment transfer processes. However, most studies using fallout radionuclides have focussed on small areas. Increasing acceptance of the important role of fine sediment in degrading aquatic habitats and in the transfer and fate of nutrients and contaminants within terrestrial and fluvial systems has emphasized the need for sediment management programmes in many areas of the world. Such programmes commonly focus on the catchment scale and an understanding of the sediment budget of a catchment represents a key requirement for developing effective sediment management strategies. Although the need for information on catchment sediment budgets is clear, obtaining such information faces many practical problems. While fallout radionuclides offer considerable potential for use in documenting sediment budgets for small areas, there is a need to up-scale their use to provide information at the catchment — and larger scales. To date there have been few attempts to develop and implement such upscaling. This paper describes the results of three studies undertaken by the authors to address this need. These examples include, firstly, the use of caesium-137 (137Cs) measurements to provide the data required for a national scale soil erosion inventory; secondly, the use of areawidescale spatially distributed sampling of 137Cs inventories to assemble information on catchment sediment budgets; and finally the use of 137Cs and excess lead-210 (Pbex) measurements to establish sedimentation rates on river floodplains.

A Bayesian model decision support system: dryland salinity management application

Addressing environmental management problems at catchment scales requires an integrated modelling approach, in which key bio-physical and socio-economic drivers, processes and impacts are all considered. Development of Decision Support Systems (DSSs) for environmental management is rapidly progressing. This paper describes the integration of physical, ecological, and socio-economic components i...

Activity concentration of radionuclides in plants in the environment of Western Ghats

Background: A field study on the transfer of primordial radionuclides 238U, 232Th, 40K and fallout radionuclides 210Po in different plant species in tropical forest of western Ghats environment is presented. Material and Methods: The Top storey, Second storey, Shrubs and epiphytic plant species were chosen and concentration of these radionuclides in plant and soil were measured by employing gam...

Investigating the temporal dynamics of suspended sediment during flood events with 7Be and 210Pbxs measurements in a drained lowland catchment

Soil erosion is recognized as one of the main processes of land degradation in agricultural areas. High suspended sediment loads, often generated from eroding agricultural landscapes, are known to degrade downstream environments. Accordingly, there is a need to understand soil erosion dynamics during flood events. Suspended sediment was therefore sampled in the river network and at tile drain o...

Using a special empirical model to estimate sediment yield of Koohbord dam watershed in Kohgilouyeh County

Extended abstract Koohbord dam watershed with a total area of 38.29 square kilometers in Kohgiluyeh and Boyerahmad province is one of the watersheds without sedimentation data, which requires the use of empirical models to estimate the sediment for estimating sediment, so the results obtained through data is the basis of the management plans of dam watershed. In this research, using base maps ...

Chernobyl & the marine environment : The radiological impact in context

by Pavel Povinec, Scott Fowler, and Murdoch Baxter I he Chernobyl nuclear accident in April 1986 had a significant impact on both the terrestrial and marine environments. The total activity of the nuclear debris released was so high (1-2.10 becquerel) that the radioactive fallout distributed widely after the accident actually dominated anthropogenic environmental levels in various parts of the ...
